The C Word – Part 3
We have seen the importance of diet when it comes to the fight against cancer in the previous articles and how cancer acts as far as metabolism is concerned. This article will introduce the supplements I recommend for those of you in the life or death battle against this invading force called cancer.
There are four mineral supplements that I recommend, Calcium, Magnesium, Selenium, and Zinc. They are included in the alkaline reserve minerals and are necessary for pH regulation in the cells, oxygen transport, protein synthesis, anti-oxidant and immune function, all vital in the fight against cancer.
These are considered alkaline reserve minerals and most of us have depleted levels to start with. As we saw in the last article these minerals are found in the vegetables we aren’t eating. The body becoming too acidic is a problem when cancer begins to flourish, so the availability of these minerals to stabilize the pH in the cells and system becomes very important.
Calcium:
Regulate cell permeability,
Maintain the acid-base balance in the cell. It is very alkaline and is used to maintain the pH of the cells and elsewhere in the body. Since the pH of the cancer cells have fallen below the 7.0 pH and become acidic, it is very important that Calcium be available to raise the pH in the cell.
Acts as a transporter for oxygen across the cell membrane. This is very important since the cancer cells have become anaerobic (not oxygen burning).
Has a sedative effect on the nervous and muscular systems. Lowering stress is important in the body’s ability to defend itself efficiently.
Magnesium:
Cell membrane effects. These include cell membrane permeability, muscle contraction, nerve impulse conduction, and opposing the action of calcium.
Intracellular fluid regulation. This includes viscosity, buffering, PO4 transport, and enzyme activation.
Regulation of protein synthesis.
Zinc:
Is called the gentle strength mineral and is a balancing mineral, as well. It is one of the most interesting and fascinating minerals needed in our bodies. It is required for hundreds of enzymes that control functions as diverse as hearing, taste and smell, health of the skin, hair, nails, and connective tissue, sexual function, digestion, immune response, blood sugar regulation, vision and more.
Zinc is also involved in protein synthesis, a vital function, where it is required for several key enzymes in RNA and DNA synthesis such as RNA transferase.
Zinc is found throughout our food supply, but is more bio-available in meat.
Selenium:
It is essential for the health of the thyroid gland, along with iodine. Most people are low in both minerals.
Selenium is also a powerful anti-oxidant, required for glutathione synthesis and heavy metal detoxification, cancer prevention, and the immune response.
These are naturally found in our food supply and in more quantity, and quality, in foods grown or raised following strict organic practices. However, these should be supplemented as well, to assure adequate amounts are available for your body to use in its battle against cancer.
